Morden Veterinary Clinic provides horse owners with a complete equine wellness program. Equine wellness focuses on preventative care and early intervention in any issues that are arising. As part of an equine wellness plan, we offer physical exams, vaccination protocols that are customized to suit your horses’ needs, deworming schedules guided by regular fecal egg counts as well as nutritional consultation.
Horses have hypsodontic cheek teeth, meaning their premolars and molars continuously erupt throughout their life. Since their domestication, horses have had challenges wearing their teeth in a normal pattern. Dental disease resulting in pain, malocclusions, infections and behavior issues is common in horses. Dentistry should be performed on a regular basis by a licensed veterinarian to prevent these problems from arising. Morden Veterinary Clinic offers oral exams using sedation and an oral speculum for the safety and comfort of your horse. We offer both power floating and hand floating techniques for the treatment of dental imbalances. Our veterinarians address imbalances in both the molars and incisors for a completely balanced mouth. Digital radiography of the skull is readily available for cases involving tooth roots or the sinuses; surgical referral is available when required.
Lameness is a common issue in today’s performance horse. We offer complete lameness evaluation including gait assessment at the walk, trot and canter, flexion and stress tests, and nerve blocks to help isolate the source of lameness. Under saddle evaluation is available if lameness is not readily detectable in hand. Morden Veterinary Clinic offers a variety of treatments for lameness including joint injections, as well as integrative therapies including acupuncture. Diagnostic imaging including digital radiography and ultrasonagraphy are available. Referral to university institutions for advanced imaging techniques including MRI, CT and nuclear scintigraphy is available as required.
Acupuncture is another integrative modality. This treatment modality has been explained by several models, however, it was developed from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy. TCM states that there is an energy (qi) that flows through the body in a rhythmic and cyclic pattern. This energy flow can be altered by injuries, illnesses or stress. TCM care involves placing fine needles into specific areas in the body known as acupuncture points to change the flow of qi through these areas, and in doing so, restoring the body to balance. There are several variations of acupuncture available at the Morden Veterinary Clinic: acupuncture (dry needling), aquapuncture (local injections of Vitamin B12 for longer lasting effect) and electroacupuncture (using an electrical stimulus across acupuncture points).
Equine reproductive care is available through the Morden Veterinary Clinic. We offer mare breeding soundness exams including ultrasound, cytology, culture and sensitivity, and vaginal exams. We also offer regular ultrasound evaluation for timing insemination. We provide aseptic insemination with both fresh and frozen semen. Frozen semen storage is also available. Pregnancy examination as early as 11 days is available. We offer emergency care for foaling and dystocia management to clients in our regular
practice areas. Breeding operation consultation is available. Please inquire regarding embryo transfer and stallion collections.
The Morden Veterinary Clinic has hospitalization facilities for equine medical cases. Fluid therapy, daily medications, and monitoring by veterinary staff is available. We offer comprehensive in house laboratory testing for accurate diagnostics and monitoring of medical patients. Diagnostic imaging including radiology, ultrasonagraphy, and endoscopy are available.
Pre-purchase exams are available and can be modified to suit each client’s needs. Our most basic evaluations include a brief physical and lameness exam, but comprehensive evaluations including pre-purchase radiographs, drug testing, ultrasounds and endoscopy are available. Pre-purchase reports and radiographic interpretation reports are sent to buyers following a comprehensive pre purchase exam. * Please be aware that pre-purchase exams are routinely performed for the buyers and the owners of the horse may not be given access to the findings of the exam.
